Top Tips for Optimising Gut Health with Homeopathy

Writer: Branwen GeggBranwen Gegg

When I was first learning about homeopathy, I was surprised to discover that it can be used (quite effectively) to recover gut health and heal dysbiosis. I have seen many clients suffering from symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating and abdominal pain experience the healing powers of homeopathy on the gut. Homeopathy has the power to heal dysbiosis, resolve diarrhoea and treat any upper digestive symptoms as well.

How does it do this?

It works by giving our body a gentle nudge in the right direction with vibrational medicine. Samuel Hahnemann believes that the body did not need large amount of medicines in order to heal. Homeopathy functions on the concept that 'like cures like' therefore, the substances that causes disease in healthy persons are used to heal sick persons experiencing the same symptoms. A good example of this is the homeopathic preparation of Coffea cruda, which is given for insomnia, tremors, sweating and palpitations (the very symptoms that coffee causes).

But today I really wanted to talk about gut health and how homeopathy can be of assistance in restoring optimal functioning.

Signs you may need gut healing include:

  • symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and heartburn

  • losing or gaining weight without making changes to your diet or exercise routine

  • insomnia, brain fog or fatigue

  • mental health issues such as depression and anxiety

  • skin rashes such as eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis

  • autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Sjogren's syndrome (SS), etc

The Microbiome

The microbiome is an incredible population of good and bad microbes living in the gut. Approximately 100 trillion microbes live in our digestive system and assist in multiple functions including:

  • improving mental health via serotonin and dopamine production

  • improving skin health via the skin-gut-brain axis

  • helping to break down and digest food and nutrients such as B vitamins, Vitamin K and short chain fatty acids which are anti-inflammatory in the body

  • protecting against toxins in the body via bifidobacteria which keeps toxins from passing through the intestinal wall and into your bloodstream.

  • improving immune function via production of antibodies

Homeopathic remedies that assist gut healing:

  • Bowel Nosodes are remedies created from diseased bowel tissue. When you think of the premise of like cures like these remedies then heal those with bowel infections such gastroenteritis and dysbiosis. I have seen these remedies resolve gut issues that were not responding to naturopathic treatment.

  • Nux vomica - a great all round remedy for treating general gut issues including heartburn and a sense of fullness after eating rich meals.

  • Pulsatilla - for those who are experiencing loose stools along with an absence of thirst.

  • China - commonly associated with extreme loss of fluids and bleeding associated with loose stools.

  • Arsenicum album - is great for food poisoning causing loose stools. Symptoms commonly include a burning sensation in stomach and fluid intake is achieved with small sips only.

  • Ipecac - commonly used to treat a constant nausea which may not have other gastric symptoms.

  • Lycopodium - commonly experience fullness despite how much food is consumed.

Supplementation with probiotics as well as diet and lifestyle changes is a must to address causative factors and create a well rounded healing environment.
